Foreigners to pay for autobahn trips

porscheGermany is to charge foreigners for the use of its roads, including the autobahn.

Charging will begin in 2016.

The country’s transport minister said the move should bring in €2.5bn over four years.

The cost is likely to run from €10 for 10 days to €100 for one year.

German vehicles will also be liable for the levy, but a reduction in car tax will level out the charge.

The minister insisted that the law does not violate EU discrimination rules.

Neighbouring Austria and the Netherlands are believed to have complained about the tax, while the residents of Bavaria, where the minister’s Christian Social Union party is based, have been complaining for some time of having to pay on the roads of those countries.
