US-Germany spy plot thickens

spyA second German has come under investigation in the spying row between the US and Germany.

German authorities searched the house of an employee of a defence ministry who is suspected of spying.

Earlier this month, an employee of an intelligence agency was put under arrest, accused of passing secret documents to US National Security Agency. The arrest ironically was made on the 4th of July.

Chancellor Angela Merkel is not amused. On Monday she said that if confirmed, the intelligence case would be a "clear contradiction of what I consider to be trusting co-operation" with the US.

Although German media report that the current investigation is serious, there were no reports of a second arrest.

The media also claim the inquiry is a new “US spy” case but prosecutors have not named the foreign state concerned.

Nevertheless, the US ambassador visited the German foreign ministry for the second time this week. The US embassy in Berlin has not commented on the allegations.

Germany was taken aback last year when US whistleblower Edward Snowden’s leaked documents showed that the NSA may have been monitoring Mrs Merkel’s mobile phone calls.

Until this point, the two nations had been close allies. They are the two largest members of the Nato alliance.

Lucky that the UK Secret Service is not involved in any of this US / German spying nonsense - having strict laws banning interception of calls and emails unless justified by a judge and vaguely interesting to the bloke with the headphones.

Still 'our boys' identified those Portuguese jihadists in East London ... who had put Tourism down as their reason for visiting the UK. (Or, being honest like all Portuguese - had they mis-spelt Terrorism?)

And who - having seen all the UK has to offer - are now off touring Syria with their iPads, iPhones, Apple Macs .... :P
