Mobile boarding passes are now available on Ryanair on its new mobile app.
The app lets people download their boarding pass onto their smartphone. Still in the planning is an app for iPads.
The app has similarities with the carrier’s website in that people can purchase flights, chose seat allocation, and check in for their flight as well as accessing hotel and car hire.
Passengers are still required to check in up to one week (and no less than four hours) before their scheduled departure. They can still print out boarding cards before they arrive.
But anyone who can’t download the pass onto their smartphone because the battery has failed will be changed £15 for a pass printed out at the airport.
Nearly 10% of airports used by Ryanair do not have mobile check-in services. The company says these airports will be listed on the Ryanair website.
This is one of several changes the airline has introduced to try to make itself more attractive to the public and to business people. They include greater baggage allowance, allocated seats, and axing some contentious fees, such as issuing boarding passes at £70 a pop.
Last month it appealed to families by introducing some reduced fees for infants and children travelling on Ryanair.
