The GNR’s latest safety initiative to pull over bikers to check for any infractions of the laws neatly coincides with this weekend’s Faro Bikers Festival.
As 15,000 inbound free-spending bikers swell the ranks of tourists in the Algarve and prepare to settle in for a weekend of partying, music and bonhomie near Faro airport, the GNR decided this was an ideal weekend to see how many bikers could be checked for their own safety.
Between Saturday and Monday, drivers of motorcycles, mopeds, tricycles and quad bikes will randomly be stopped as police look for evidence of dangerous driving, lack of helmets, speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol and various other mild, recreational drugs which have proved popular over the years with certain fraternities.
The GNR also will be particularly keen on checking that all paperwork and tyres are correct and legal.
The GNR helpfully announced today that its weekend operation will focus on 'roads with more traffic' and where, not surprisingly, there is an increased risk of accidents.
During Operation Moto, bikers will be advised on increased safety and made aware of good driving practices.
