Monarch Airlines, along with its group companion Cosmos Holidays, are believed to have received an injection of £60 million.
This will be the third time in five years that Swiss billionaires have recapitalised the business. In 2009 £45 million was injected, followed two years later by £75 million.
The travel group behind Monarch and the tour operator Cosmos is reported to be in talks with its Swiss controller, the Mantegazza family.
Monarch has reduced its flight prices to better compete with easyJet and Ryanair which have added more flights to their existing routes.
But Monarch is also pressing ahead with plans to expand its fleet, having ordered 30 new Boeing 737s costing $3bn. With more aircraft, Monarch hopes to increase both capacity and customer numbers as it continues to pursue its strategy to switch from its initial role as a charter airline to scheduled flights.
The airline is in recovery mode, reporting a £5.9 million profit before tax for 2013. The year before it experienced a loss of £33 million.
