Albufeira bars and restaurants checked for illegal workers

albufeira2The Borders and Foreigners agency has been at it again, this time in Albufeira where officers have been swooping on shops and restaurants checking on workers' documents.

SEF officers nabbed 11 illegal aliens working in Albufeira’s warren of catering establishments and shops out of 80 questioned.

The swoop was aimed at "combatting the exploitation of labour, illegal workers and the phenomenon of undeclared work in the Algarve region."

This was all part of the wide-ranging "Operation Safe Summer" and joining the SEF were staff from the Authority for Working Conditions (ACT) and Social Security. The SEF also filed six cases of contravention of employment law .

"The six foreign nationals will voluntarily be leaving the country, while the rest were asked to turn up at the SEF office since they met the necessary conditions to settle in Portugal," the SEF statement read, adding that it had brought "six cases against employers with fines ranging between €12,000 and €60,000."
