Algarve drivers continue to drink and drive

Breath test kitA further 107 drivers were stopped this weekend and will be prosecuted, fined and their licenses suspended for varying periods of time. Some face jail.

The National Republican Guard (GNR) arrested 157 drivers this weekend for a variety of offences, the majority of which were for driving under the influence of alcohol (107) and for driving without a driving license (19) - a pretty essential part of the necessary paperwork when in charge of a vehicle.

The remainder of drivers were arrested for drug possession, the illegal possession of firearms, being in the country illegally, possession of prohibited weapons and various other crimes. The haul included hashish, four firearms and 2,116 ‘stolen garments.’

The figures are for various targetted cities in the country but the Faro region always seems to be on the list and the Algarve harbours few angels when the driving offence statistics are released. Despite harsh penalties many Algarve drivers are happy to risk their own life and the lives of other road users by having ‘one for the road.’
