Business boss fears "a social explosion" due to austerity measures

Social unrest predicted "Being without hope is socially dangerous," says the leader of Portugal’s employers' confederation.

The president of the Business Confederation Portugal has put the state on red alert for a possible social explosion against the sacrifices that are being involuntarily screwed out of the Portuguese people.

António Saraiva regrets the lack of clear explanation of the government’s austerity measures, saying that where there is no hope, there is an increased risk of social problems.

"Being without hope is socially dangerous. We are a gentle mannered country, but if things are not well explained, if the austerity measures do not have tangible results, I fear that the social balloon may burst in one way or another - not in terms of a widespread conflict, but we may see signs of a social explosion," said Saraiva at a pensions conference in Lisbon today.
