Exhausted vultures rescued

Vultures rescued in the AlgarveTwo adult vultures have been rescued and are recovering in the bird hospital in the Ria Formosa National Park. GNR environmental protection officers from Portimão took charge of the two large birds which are likely to have run out of energy on their annual migration to north Africa.

Last Friday the GNR in Aljezur was alerted by a driver who has spotted a bird at the side of the EN120 between Lagos and Aljezur. This turned out to be an exhausted vulture.

The military nabbed the bird with ease and handed to the dedicated environmental protection team for shipment to the RIAS Centre for Research and Recovery of Wild Animals just outside Olhão.

This week the GNR in Lagos collected another fine specimen. This one was in difficulty in Lagos marina. The bird had been spotted in the water by a fisherman who informed the police and waited nearby.

Although the bird seemed to have no obvious injuries it too was shipped to Olhao for rest, feeding, observation and later release.
