New electric bike to hit market

New bike hits the marketA revolutionary new electric bicycle is due to hit British bike ways next summer.

The Jive Bike is the first of its kind and was the inspired idea of a Polish postgraduate student at University College London.

An electric motor in the hub of the front wheel propels the bike to a top speed of 15.6mph.  It can go for 20 miles before recharging is needed, but it can also be pedalled.

Weighing in at only 15kg, it folds down to the size of a small suitcase, helped by not having a chain and being made from aluminium.

It is expected to cost £1,500.

To develop his concept, Marcin Paitkowski raised £180,000 from an online website which sources equity for start-ups, Crowdcube.  The portfolio of individual investments raised range from £20 to more than £50,000.

Mr Paitkowski hit upon the idea while studying for a master’s degree in Technology Entrepreneurship.

The course was conceived as a way to provide students with practical entrepreneurial skills through academic study, and engagement with the “real-world” business community.

Students from more than 60 countries have completed the course.
