Lisbon slows to a halt in torrential rain

lisbonfloodTorrential rain fell this afternoon on Lisbon causing flooding and transport chaos.

The water reached half a metre in depth in many areas, stopping traffic and leaving pedestrians struggling or seeking shelter.

Bombeiros recorded 156 events, 121 of which were related to flooding that occurred in Lisbon from 14.00, the time when the rain was at its heaviest.

Parts of the metro were halted and wall collapsed and it was feared that three students has been buried, according to the Lisbon bombeiros.

When a request was made for teachers to do a head count there were three students missing in the vicinity of the collapse at the College Maria Pia but they eventually were located.

Lisbon councillors this afternoon accused the Portuguese weather service or failure to predict such a torrential downpour.

"There was a heavy dopwnpour. No orange warning had been issued for the district of Lisbon," said one council member at a press conference convened due to the severe impact of the bad weather on the city.

Many traffic light systems at key road junctions failed due to the high rainfall and many cars had to be abandoned, causing more confusion and disruption as the waters subsided and the city attempted to get back to work.

The Algarve by comparison was scattered clouds and some showers, with thunder and lightning threatened for Tuesday and then a clear and sunny week ahead.
