The search continued this morning, Thursday, for a man who disappeared into the sea from the beach of Monte Clérigo, Aljezur.
Yesterday afternon’s search failed to find the man, according to the captain of the port of Lagos, Commander Carvalho Pinto.
"A man who was in trouble in the sea, we are unaware of his age and nationality, and disappeared at 16.00hrs near three nearby swimmers – he has not been found yet," said Commander Pinto yestrerday.
Some clients of the surf school were close to the man and tried to come to his aid but he disappeared beneath the waves.
An air force helicopter and the lifeguard speedboat were scrambled during the afternoon but neither crews found the man, nor did the marine police.
"With nightfall the search was suspended, and will resume tomorrow morning," concluded Commander Pinto.
The summer bathing season’s death toll at Portugal's beaches - May 1 to September 29 - was seven. This decrease of almost 60% compared to 2013, when 12 people died, is welcome news despite the target being zero.
Only one case was reported for the Algarve region involving a Portuguese woman who drowned at Praia do Cabeço in Vila Real de Santo António in mid-August.
