The Odiana Association is launching the Great Guadiana Pedestrian Route which adds to and links up the existing network of 19 shorter walks.
The total walk is now 65 kilometers which adds to the Algarve’s 'nature tourism' appeal for hikers, a key off season tourist sector.
By the end of the year the ‘Grande Rota do Guadiana’ will be fully signposted, approved by the Camping and Mountaineering Federation of Portugal and ready for the first walkers who, if they start in Alcoutim, can wimble along the riverside and country lanes passing through Odeleite, Azinhal, Castro Marim and end up tired and happy in Vila Real de Santo António.
The aim is for quality tourism, European integration, and a long lasting alternative to mass tourism by promoting outdoor activities.
This route will also connect to the 'Via Algarviana' which weaves its way from Sagres to Alcoutim, and the ‘Litoral Ecovia’ which links Sagres to Vila Real de Santo António and allows connection to international routes in neighboring Spain.
The Great Guadiana Pedestrian Route has been funded 60% by Proder with additional funds from Alcoutim, Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António councils.
