More angry protests in Italy

Italy riotsMore protests have taken place in Rome as demonstrators against austerity clashed with the police.

At least 16 people, including four officers, were injured and eight protesters were arrested, as traffic ground to a standstill and people fled the tear gas.

The demonstrators, many beneath masks and motorcycle helmets, pelted the police with eggs and fruit, tried to hit them with poles and bottles, and climbed on top of police vehicles. Police and paramilitary officers in riot gear fought back with tear gas.

The protesters were calling for more affordable housing, better wages and improved conditions for immigrants and refugees, tens of thousands of whom have no legal status within Italy.  Many squat in empty buildings or sleep rough.

One of the organisers said the demonstration was a call to action by the government to provide affordable housing.

Another demonstration would be organised in the city on Nov 10, organisers said.

An earlier protest in October also ended in violence when a hardcore of protesters — mostly young men with their faces obscured by scarves and masks — attacked the Economy Ministry.
