British “stealth” taxes up 50%

4801The amount of money raised by the British government through indirect taxes has gone up by 50% in the last decade.

The amount collected by HMRC in “stealth” taxes went from £93bn in 2003-04 to £138bn in the last tax year (2013-14), research from Bloomsbury Professional, a specialist tax publisher, found.

The largest hike was 281% on air passenger duty, increasing from £790m to £3bn.

Landfill taxes saw the second greatest rise, going from £610m to £1.2bn.

Betting and gaming taxes increased from £1.4bn to £2.1bn.

VAT receipts stood at £69.1bn a decade ago, but the figure has now reached £104.7bn, while the income from customs duties increased from £1.9bn to £2.9bn.
