Algarve's Pousadas welcome dogs

katFollowing a new strategy the Pousadas de Portugal chain of hotels has announced that it now will allow small dogs up to 15 kilos to have access to parts of some hotels.

The three remaining Algarve Pousadas in Estoi, Tavira and Sagres will allow dogs as from December 15th which "solves the problem many families have when wishing  to enjoy a vacation this holiday season, but not wanting to leave their faithful friends behind."

According to the new family friendly dogs policy, the cost of accommodation for the four-legged friends is €25 a night and includes the supply of a complete doggy kit including a bed, a food and water dispenser, poo bags and a bag of snacks.

The five Pousadas de Portugal in the scheme will be joined by 11 further hotels as from January 1, 2015.

Good idea, perhaps the hotels will use the excess of dogs running around to create some nice meals;

for example for starters dog cocktail followed by dog and chips and finally dog strudle. Yum yum

Curious mix of comments and reviewers marks - suggesting many have only ever seen dogs that are loved and cared for on TV.

So seen but not understood - probably whilst 'channel hopping' - looking for the next Brazilian soap ? Or during the endless advert breaks that are mainly for half a dozen businesses .. telecoms or the supermarkets.

Reminding us yet again why so many vets in Portugal have 'good english' - because the text books they studied when training were not in Portuguese.

Washing a pet dog is quite normal. Just keep the soap out of its eyes and not too hot water. Then towel dry.

Not sure about those sharing their stay in Pousada's with unwashed flea ridden hitch-hikers though.

Are these camel lovers ?

Best put them at the back overlooking the 'wheely bins' ?

:D There is nothing to laugh at: Turismo do Portugal a while ago announced that "new kinds of tourism" should be introduced. Maybe this is one of them and for the next month we probably may expect "tourism for theethless people", "tourism for over 90 people", "cabrita-teeth-loving tourists", etc. etc. All other kinds are already in place: "tourism for frustrated people", "tourism for pedos", "tourism for cowboys" and "tourism for motherf*****s".... Conclusion: we have a very rich collection of all species over here !

Quoting Mike Towl:
Good oh! At least it precludes them just dumping the turd machines on the street for August. Shame about the Pousadas becoming flea pits.

Miserable git :P .
I would be more concerned about some of these filthy back-packers leaving behind their legacy of bed-bugs  .

That this is getting any mention at all - and some of the comments already made - brilliantly sheds light on how unnecessarily backward Portugal is in both its tourism sector and its attitudes in general to pets.

With a balanced developed tourism sector as the EU envisages there would be varied and targeted accommodation for all.

No-one would need to 'cancel a booking' because of some change in policy.

When will we see adverts that specifically target 'the pink euro', or those wanting silent (ie no noise) holidays, adults or elderly only. Even specific interests such as Star Trek or Elvis Presley reunions.

Sure the other EU nationals foreigners were offering these alternatives but so often, as obstructed from being legal - illegally !

It's good business sense; there are a lot of people who would prefer air travel and a hotel stay, but without hotels who will accept their dogs, it's caravan or nothing.
Joanne; I expect only a few rooms will be reserved for dog people. Any of the others should suit you.
As a small landlord, the flexibility to accept pets gives me an edge over the big agencies. Some customers have strong feelings for their animals.

Not good news for those of us who have dog allergies!
I will have to cancel a booking I have for next August

Do they have to pay as well ?
Or is this this " a brand new line of business" for the pusadas ?
