The number of people in work in Portugal increased in the third quarter of the year by 1.4% compared to the previous quarter.
This was the second greatest quarterly growth in the eurozone, coming after the 1.7% increase in Greece.
The average growth in the eurozone crept up by only 0.2% during the period.
Compared to the same period in 2013, Portugal experienced growth of just under 2% against a eurozone average of 0.6%.
The increases mean that an estimated 148 million people in the eurozone alone are in employment. Looking at the entire EU population, 227 million men and women have jobs.
The rates are, however, far from the peak of employment which was at the beginning of 2008 after which it fell dramatically during that year and the first half of 2009.
From then levels remained much lower than the peak but stable for around 2 years until the middle of 2011 when a further downward slide began which lasted until the beginning of 2013.
Since then, the level was again stable until employment finally began to edge up at the beginning of this year.
