Magaluf clamps down on smut to become 'mature resort'

mallorcaMagaluf, long popular with young people on drunken bar crawls, is to turn respectable and become a “mature resort”, promised officials in Majorca.

The transformation will happen by next summer, the Balearic government has declared.

A number of new bylaws to “raise standards” are planned which will outlaw drinking alcohol in the streets and other antisocial behaviour, possibly including bar crawls.

Although the area has been tolerating drunken behaviour and increasing debauchery from young tourists for 20 years, a tipping point appears to have been reached last summer.

An 18-year-old girl was filmed performing sex acts on a series of men in exchange for free drinks. She was not the first as the craze had been developing for some while, but the incident made headlines abroad.

The local government has now said such behaviour will no longer be tolerated. All hotels and apartments for tourists will have to have plans within six months to adapt to new hotel specifications.

Already more than €100m has been invested in renovating and upgrading several of Magaluf’s hotels with a further €200m still to be spent.

Police will increase inspections of trouble spots, sometimes joined by British police, and more Spanish Civil Guard officers will be in evidence.
