Christmas Day burgers gain popularity

REINDEERThousands of people in the UK abandoned the notion of a traditional Christmas meal, opting instead for takeaway hamburgers and fried chicken.

Orders soared by 19% compared to last Christmas.

The figures come from HungryHouse.co.uk, a service which lets consumers order from more than 9,000 restaurants in large cities.

Most popular on Christmas day were hamburgers and fried chicken, followed by pizza and Indian meals and then Chinese and sushi.

Last year, pepperoni pizza was the most popular selection on Christmas day.

People must have altered their selections for the holiday meal as usually the top favourites with Hungry House are Chinese and Indian.

Orders on Christmas Eve were also healthy, increased by 60% week-on-week

"People are slowly discovering that takeaway is another option on Christmas Day," a Hungry House spokesperson said. "But the big surprise for us this year was the increase in traffic on Christmas Eve."

The average order for Christmas lunch came to £18.40 which does suggest that the orders were for people on their own or a couple.

Hungry House, which is now owned by international takeaway group Delivery Hero, said that two-thirds of its partner restaurants were open on Christmas Day this year.
