Barroso snipes at Cameron as 'UK loses its European influence'

barrosoJosé Manuel Barroso, the former President of the European Commission considers that the British influence in the European Union has declined to the point that London has ceased to be the link between Brussels and Washington.

Barroso also warned the British Government that a possible exit from the EU would be a real mistake.

According to Barroso, the United Kingdom has been losing influence within the European Union to the point where London has lost its historic status of the bridge in bilateral relations between Brussels and Washington.

In an interview with the BBC, Barroso hinted that Germany now has pole position in the European leadership.

The former prime minister of Portugal also took the opportunity to warn David Cameron that an EU departure by the UK would be "a real mistake from all points of view."

This follows Barroso’s October accusation that Cameron would be committing an "historic mistake" if he pursuesd an immigration policy which undermines European principles.

The retiree also criticised the "defensive agenda" being used in Brussels by Westminster, namely the referendum on the UK staying in the European Community that Cameron plans to hold if the Conservative party wins the election next year.

"You cannot criticize Brussels and the EU from day 1 to day 6 and then ask people to vote for Europe on the 7th," noted Barroso.

Barroso left his lowest blow until last when comparing Cameron with Tony Blair; "Basically I see David Cameron as a very pragmatic leader" but "Tony Blair played a really important role in the EU, he was at the center of decisions, and today this is no longer the case."
