Migrants send whopping €5bn to Portugal

eurozoneMoney sent from people resident in European Union countries to those outside the EU28 amounted to €28.3 billion in 2013.

At the same time, funds being sent to people inside the EU stood at €10.3 billion.

The majority of these personal transfers consist of money sent by migrants to their country of origin.

Out of all 28 nations, it was Portugal where the largest amount of money was sent to its residents, ahead of Poland, the UK and Romania.

During 2013, €5 billion was sent to Portuguese residents. This was a full half of all personal transfers coming into EU countries.

Of this, €3.1 billion was sent from people in other EU countries and a further €1.9 came in from people in non-EU nations.

At the same time, €1.4 billion was sent by Portuguese residents to others both inside and outside the EU.

The largest personal transfers of funds were sent from France (€9bn), Italy (€6.7bn) and the UK (€6.3bn).

The data, provided by Eurostat, also allows that in some countries the information is deemed confidential. Spain, Germany and Finland are among those countries.
