Google pulls Google Glass

googleglassGoogle is to cease production and sales of its Google Glass eyewear.

The product was launched in the US only in 2013 and just last summer in the UK but only to a limited consumer audience of software developers at a cost of £990.

Observers expected it would then be opened up to the general public, but instead Google has decided to stop production.

Google Glass enabled wearers to see computer information on a small screen, take photos and videos, and get directions.

Initial enthusiasm for the device soon edged away, however. Some expected more of the product. Others felt the headgear was unflattering and this clearly would limit potential buyers.

Concerns over privacy also percolated. Some premises, particularly bars and restaurants, banned its use.

Google says it will continue its research into smart glasses. Other companies have launched smart glasses and other types of wearable technology, but a popular form has yet to emerge.
