Russians tourist spending in the UK fell by 28% last year because of the tumbling value of the rouble.
They had been in the top five of the biggest spenders among nations from outside the EU. Now they are no longer even in the top ten.
The rouble has shed 50% of its value, making purchases twice as expensive for Russians.
The data comes from Global Blue, the tax company which 30 years ago forged the concept of tax-free shopping for non-EU visitors. They can claim back the 20% VAT on spending above £30 at shops and hotels.
Despite the Russian shortfall, total spending was down only 3% from 2013. Spending was up 9% by visitors from Hong Kong.
Christmas time, despite the various religions involved, has become an increasingly popular time for buyers from abroad.
Revenue from Chinese tourists was up by 20% just in December
And spending by people from Middle Eastern countries also rose sharply in December, especially by those from Qatar and Kuwait.
Qatari shoppers are the ones who spend the most per transaction - £1,406 - compared with the average transaction of £633.
