The online retailer Amazon has proclaimed it is “excited that so many customers are taking advantage of Sunday delivery”.
A huge surge in UK deliveries on Sundays resulted in a four-fold increase compared to last year.
The change underscores the rapid changes taking place in consumer expectations and shopping patterns.
Amazon is investing in its own delivery network, Amazon Logistics, which provides the facilities for local and national delivery companies to deliver products on a Sunday. This is already possible in most of the UK’s major cities.
It also offers a glimpse into a possible explanation for the sudden axing of free delivery to Portugal and other countries. But free delivery is still an option for those in the UK who are in Amazon’s Prime scheme.
Jamie Stephenson, UK director for Amazon Logistics, said: “We’re excited that so many customers are taking advantage of Sunday delivery and that so many local and regional delivery companies continue to join the Amazon Logistics platform.”
