A Dutch citizen suspected of kidnapping a minor has been arrested in Albufeira.
The man was arrested after roadside GNR officers had found that an International Arrest Warrant in his name was pending, according to the Faro GNR command, which said that a minor also in the vehicle had been taken into the care of the authorities.
The lucky arrest took place on Thursday during a regular roadside check on vehicles by the GNR which flagged down a Dutch registered vehicle.
The driver clearly was nervous and officers found a large amount of cash - around €20,000 - which made them rather suspicious. They were more suspicious still when it turned out that a 15 year old passenger had no ID and they driver said that he had just bought her..
While running checks the officers consulted the Schengen Information System where it quickly was discovered that the 39-year-old Bosnian with a Dutch passport had a current International Arrest Warrant in his name for the suspected kidnap of a minor.
The man has appeared in Évora court to start an extradition process and is being held in Beja jail in the meantime.
