Briton held for murder in Spain

prisoninteriorA British man has been arrested in Spain for murder.

The arrest of the 40-year-old was for allegedly killing a German man, 43, who had used an iPad to film the British man’s young daughter.

The incident took place on Saturday in a restaurant in Sotogrande, one of Spain’s exclusive Costa del Sol resorts.

The German had been charged with possessing child pornography a few days before in January, according to authorities in Spain, and was awaiting trial. It is not known if the British man knew this.

A spokeswoman for the civil guard said: “The discussion apparently began because of alleged recordings that the victim was making of the aggressor’s daughter.

“When he [the aggressor] saw what was happening he took the tablet from him, saw the recordings, threw the device to the ground and attacked him.

“The victim had been arrested by the civil guard a few days ago for possession of child pornography.”

Police said the victim was found with “very serious” wounds although it is believed that no weapons were involved.  He died after arriving at a hospital in nearby La Línea de la Concepción.

After the assault, the British man left the restaurant but witnesses later identified him. He is believed to be a Sotogrande resident whose daughter is younger than eight.

According to police, he has appeared before a magistrate and has been remanded in prison. Results from the postmortem are expected to show the cause of the victim’s death.

The Foreign Office said: “We are urgently investigating reports of the arrest of a British national in the Cadiz area in southern Spain. We stand ready to provide consular assistance if requested.”
