Policeman shoots his mother-in-law and evades Faro road blocks

pspA police officer murdered his mother-in-law and managed to evade road blocks set up around Faro.

The GNR and PSP set up the road blocks on Tuesday evening after shotgun blasts killed the 68-year-old woman and injured the policeman’s wife at a property the women shared in the regional capital.

The 30-year-old policeman lives in Lisbon but travelled to the Algarve equipped with a shotgun which he fired through the door, killing his mother-in-law and badly injuring his wife from whom he was separated pending divorce proceedings; these were due to be finalised on the 18th of this month.

The couple’s two daughters also were injured in the blast.

The man was seen, dressed in camouflage, leaving the building and carrying a shotgun. GNR control was alerted and road blocks hastily were set up to stop his Audi A3.

The operation was dismantled early on Wednesday as it had become clear the man had managed to evade capture.

He had, and this morning turned himself in at a police station in Castelo Branco after 12 hours on the run.

The mother-in-law died instantly and the policeman’s wife, 30, seriously injured, was taken to Faro hospital.
