Portuguse engineer wins Sony World Photography Award

auroraborealisPortuguese photographer Adrianio Neves has won a first prize in the prestigious Sony World Photography Awards.

The civil engineer, born in Tomar, will have his picture exhibited in London where he will pick up his prize next month.

Neves’s photograph is titled ‘Northern Lights over the Milky Way’ and was taken early in 2014 near Reykjavik while Neves was on a trip to Iceland.

"Winning the first prize in the Portugal section is an incredible honour," said Neves.

The competition organisers today announced the winner of Sony’s 54 national awards. The winners receive a €750 Sony RX100 III camera.

Adriano Neves will be in London for the Sony awards on 23 April and his photograph and those of the other prize winners from around the world will be on display at Somerset House, between April 24 and May 10.

In the category of photos taken with mobile phone there are three Portuguese in the running in a short list of 20 candidates.

Portugal also has two finalists in other categories where Eduardo Leal’s image of Bolivia, and Beatriz Rocha’s photo of Alentejano singers are competing for first prizes.

The Portuguese contestants are among just 1,000 finalists that have been chosen from a selection of 174,000 from 171 countries.

Earlier in March Nuno Sá’s photograph of a seahorse from the Ria Formosa won first place in the annual Underwater Photographer of the Year contest.
