Scientists say they have invented a battery which could charge a smartphone in less than one minute.
The new iPhone 6 needs about two hours for its battery to be recharged, but the new rechargeable aluminium battery would do the work in some 60 seconds.
Other devices, such as laptops and tablets, could also be recharged in short order.
The researchers say the aluminium battery can be charged 7,500 times while a lithium-ion one lasts through just 1,000 recharges.
"We have developed a rechargeable aluminium battery that may replace existing storage devices, such as alkaline batteries, which are bad for the environment, and lithium-ion batteries, which occasionally burst into flames,” said Stanford University chemistry professor Dai.
Claiming the battery has inexpensive electrodes, good safety, high-speed charging and long life, the scientist said the drawback is that it only produces half the voltage of a lithium battery.
