Second dog tossed off the cliffs at Ferragudo

clifftopfishingThe police are perturbed at events and public reaction surrounding two recent cases where dogs appear to have been thrown off the cliffs near Ferragudo, Lagoa. As for finding the culprits, the authorities are 'looking into it.'

Last Saturday morning, firefighters and officers of the Marine Police were called as a dog was spotted lying injured half way down a cliff.

The animal was thrown or fell, landing 20 metres or so down the 50 metre cliff, and had suffered a fractured spine.

The seriously injured three-year-old dog, showing physical signs of neglect, was rescued and taken by the Maritime Police to a kindly vet in Carvoeiro where it is being treated and cared for.

Last Tuesday, firefighters rescued another dog, again at the cliffs near Ferragudo, which clearly had been pushed or thrown off the top with a concrete brick around its neck.

This lucky fellow somehow survived the ordeal and now has been rehomed.

The second survivor of this outbreak of attempted cliff-top executions is more seriously injured and will need long-term care if it survives at all.

Portugal is still so totally backward that, with any criminality - in this case animal mistreatment - no-one will inform on their neighbour. It is not their business. Apparently you learn this from your parents knee. Keeping your nose out.

These dogs had a history. They must have been around humans. Family members or neighbours of the 'owner' will have noticed a missing dog.

On the assumption that these animals were driven there and not immediately local; where are the photo ID's that identify them ? What are the GNR showing as they make their enquiries ... what passes for 'looking into it'?

Just asking if anyone is missing a 'brownish dog with a white spot on the stump of is tail' does not exactly pin down the dogs doing the cliff walking.

This also raises the question of what are the complications in just declaring to your local municipal kennels that 'this dog / cat is surplus to my needs, please re-home it.' Is it that a substantial donation is expected or charge levied ' If so how much ?

Or are the Portuguese too afraid of losing face ? In this alien culture - what is their problem ?
