Prices rise in Portugal

algarveshoppingPrices for consumer goods rose in Portugal during the month of March.

This has put the rate of inflation at 0.4% for the month against a backdrop of -0.1% of average inflation across the euro region.

It is the first rise in prices in the country since December 2014. Nevertheless, it was the third highest rise in prices in the region with only Austria (0.9%) and Malta (0.5%) experiencing greater.

Spain continues to be in deflation and has been for at least the last six months. The rate in March was -0.8%, well below the eurozone average.

But the lowest rates were recorded in Greece (-1.9%) and Cyprus (-1.4%).

Inflation in the UK stood at nil, but prices have been rising steadily since at least last October.

The largest upward impacts to euro area inflation came from restaurants and cafes, and from rents.
