Moncarapacho olive oil still 'the best in the world'

olivesMonterosa olive oil, produced in Moncarapacho, Olhão by Viveiros Monterosa Lda, has won four gold medals at the ‘New York International Olive Oil Competition 2015.’

The Algarve olive oil competed with 634 oils from 25 countries in what is considered the most prestigious international competition worldwide.

Gold medals were awarded to each of the extra virgin olive oils submitted from Monterosa  and were produced from the estate’s own olive groves and milled on site in Moncarapacho in October last year.

The company, originally an ornamental plants nursery, planted 20 hectares with olive trees in 2000. The goal was to test if it is possible to make top quality olive oil in the Algarve.

“After 14 years of trial, error and adaption we now have the answer, which is yes,” said Detlev von Rosen, partner responsible for the olive project. “The climate and soil in the Algarve are well suited to olive oil production.”

This is the third consecutive year that the Monterosa olive oils have won and the continuing high quality will enable the business to gain further international recognition.
