As the traffic numbers on the Algarve EN125 start to increase, two more serious accidents happened this morning, the first leaving one dead and at least eight injured, including a Nepalese and two Canadian tourists.
The bus that crashed near the Guia roundabout just before noon left a building in ruins and traffic at a standstill for hours as the emergency services attended to the injured, two of whom are said by the GNR command to be in a 'serious condition.'
Seven ambulances were used to ferry the injured to local hospitals after the most serious accident on the EN125 this year.
The INEM helicopter was sent to the scene but was not used to assist as the injured were driven to Faro and Portimão hospitals in the ambulances.
The accident happened between Zoo Marine and the ‘chicken roundabout’ that marks the entrance to the village of Guia.
Unsurprisingly, it was the driver of the Frota Azul bus who was killed as the vehicle ploughed into the building at the side of the road. If the police know the cause of the accident, they have yet to reveal it.
The house that was hit is lived in by a couple and their child. The occupants were out when the accident happened which would have injured or killed them had they been in their lounge at the time of impact.
In a separate incident today, two Faro firefighters were injured this morning when their vehicle crashed and overturned on the EN125 in the Rio Seco area.
The two ended up in Faro hospital and the vehicle was written off. Rio Seco is to the east of Faro on the EN125 where the roadworks have been dragging on as the Faro bypass is constructed. The usual four lanes are down to two, causing long delays to commuters on a now tricky and dangerous route into town.
In a third incident, a woman was knocked down by a car and died at the scene near Pingo Doce in Portimão this afternoon. The victim had multiple injuries and then suffered a heart attack as she was being attended to by emergency services.
