Two male corpses, who authorities believe are from Togo, Africa, had died of hunger and thirst in a compartment that had been sealed for about two weeks on leaving Togo. Death may have been caused by a lack of oxygen combined with air pollution caused by the pesticides used in the seed production.
The Judicial Police in Ponta Delgada investigated the scene to see if there had been foul play. According to Matos Nogueira, the commander of the port of Ponta Delgada, the bodies were already in "an advanced state of decomposition."
The bodies of the men had no documents and will now be autopsied.
