Work started at the beginning of June to fix the anchors to buildings along Faro’s shopping streets in preparation for a series of shade sails to keep shoppers cooler in the summer months.
Both traders’ organisation ACRAL and the local Business Development Association for Faro’s Historical area are keen to upgrade the shopping facilities by keeping people shaded as they meander.
The shade sails will be hung from the facade of buildings but in a way that does not damage the many listed structures found in the area.
The shade project was approved by the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve and the current phase of the process will be completed within two weeks.
The shade sails will be hung as and when the anchors are secured and ready for use.
The newly shaded streets will be Rua da Marinha; Rua Ivens; Rua Tenente Valadim; Rua Dom Francisco Gomes; Rua de Santo António; Rua 1.º de Dezembro; Rua Rebelo da Silva; Rua Vasco da Gama; Rua Baptista Lopes; Travessa da Mota and Rua Conselheiro Bivar.
Faro council wants to offer a level of comfort to residents and tourists who visit the downtown shopping and public areas and the new shade sails are designed to brighten up the area and to encourage people to circulate with ease in the heart of the old city.
