Algarve tourist coach accident – death toll rises to four

dutchcoachcrash2One of the Dutch tourists, seriously injured in Wednesday night’s horrific coach crash on the A22 near the Paderne turnoff, today died in Faro hospital bringing the death toll to four.

The 64-year-old woman’s death was confirmed today by a hospital spokesman.

The Frota Azul coach left the motorway and plunged down a steep bank onto a minor road below, ending up on its side.

Three died at the scene and with this latest death in Faro hospital, there remain four seriously injured in Faro and one in Portimão hospital.

The accident so far has caused the death of four and injured to varying degrees a further 28.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the authorities and the regional manager for Frota Azul, Carlos Osório Gomes, said the 53-year-old driver had worked for the company for 25 years and had never before been involved in an accident while at work.

The Dutch ambassador said he did not yet know when the bodies of those killed will be released so that they can be transferred back to Holland.
