A maintenance worker attending to one of the military antennas near Sagres in the western Algarve has been crushed to death.
The 38-year-old worker was on the structure used for Air Force communications when the antenna buckled and the top section swung down, crushing the man who died at the scene.
Co-workers from the maintenance company Setronix alerted the emergency services.
Vila do Bispo Bombeiros were soon on the scene and Nelson da Silva's body was retrieved with the use of a telescopic boom brought in from Lagos.
The police said that when the top section of the antenna was eased away from the base to release the worker, the man was clearly dead from the 'trauma of impact.'
