The Portuguese government has given security forces the green light for a national “video vigilance” plan.
The measure has been published in State newspaper Diário da República under the Lei-Quadro da Política Criminal (LQPC) and involves equipping public spaces known for having a lot of activity as well as “elevated criminal statistics”.
LQPC defines a number of priorities including the fight against terrorism, gang, drug and sex crimes and even domestic violence.

So we then know policing of the people - all the people - is finally taking shape here in Portugal.
But those with longer memories will recall the total abysmal fudge of the speed cameras around Lisbon and Porto around 7 to 8 years ago.
These cameras 'caught' thousands of motorists speeding. Some doing crazy speeds. Amongst whom will have been heavyweight VIP's who are 'above the law'. So important they should not even be bothered by the law. So could not ever be prosecuted for anything....
One fudge, we learnt afterwards, being to close the original speed camera managing department (which had obviously taken itself too seriously) and transfer its duties to another that was known to be waste of time and space.
But crucially not transferring the data protection rights as well. A judge then helpfully refusing transfer of the rights. So nobody could be ID'd.
As the old saying goes - in Portugal you cannot make it up !
