Russians ride to Spanish property rescue

spanishpropertySpain is luring in new residents under its ‘Golden Visa’ scheme.

Investors looking for property are coming from the Middle East, parts of Asia and Russia.

The scheme, introduced on 1 October this year, allows non-EU nationals to gain an automatic resident permit on condition that they invest €500,000.

Tourist numbers in the last few months are said to have jumped, with more than eight million just in August, according to the Spanish tourism authority which also reported the number of Russian visitors soared by 30% to 838,876 between January and July.

Taylor Wimpey España says it has seen a vast increase in interest coming from Middle Eastern buyers. It said: "The 'Golden Visa' is clearly of high appeal to non-EU residents, especially those in Russia, China the Middle and Far East, keen to access the EU and enjoy visa-free travel in the 26-country Schengen zone.

"We have already seen a staggering 2,500% increase in Middle Eastern buyers this year versus the same period in 2012, and a 190% increase in buyers from Russia and Lithuania."

The minimum investment level is €500,000, but it can be composed of more than one property.
