The GNR chased and arrested two men suspected of theft from a car parked in Sagres and who took off at high speed in a vain attempt to outrun the police.
The men, 59 and 26, have already been in court in Lagos accused of "stealing from the interior of a vehicle and attempting to outrun a police officer," according to Faro Command.
The theft happended on Friday afternoon when a car window was broken in the parking area of the fortress at Sagres. This was witnessed and reported to the police.
"Later a patrol from Vila do Bispo, and traffic cops from Faro who were in the area, searched for the car, black Audi A3, found it and followed the suspects. They were spotted near Sagres and they fled towards Raposeira where the Vila do Bispo patrol car was waiting," explained Lt. Col. Azevedo Palhau.
When they reached Raposeira, "a high-speed chase ensued and the Audi was driven at the officers. Officers took evasive action to avoid being hit."
"The individuals attempted to reverse but hit the sidewalk, stalling the vehicle and giving the GNR an opportunity to intercept and detain the driver and passenger," added the GNR. The men had in their possession stolen objects, cash and credit cards, and a patrol later recovered objects that had been thrown from the window during the chase.
Faro Command said that the 59 year old detainee has a long record that included theft from vehicles and murder.
