The Portimão Arena is hosting the Global Underwater Explorers conference on the 7th and 8th of December, the largest gathering for underwater tourism worldwide.
The first GUE event took place in 2011 in the German city of Kiel, with about five hundred participants from around the world from 20 different countries.
The event received wide media coverage, both in the specialised diving press and in the promotion of various diving destinations.
Turismo de Portugal management says it is keen on out of season tourism and this exhibition and conference is seen as a good fit.
The highlight will be the Ocean Revival underwater park off Portimão where four naval vessels recently have been sunk to provide an exciting diving environment throughout the year.
The two day event will be in the Portimão Arena, the largest multipurpose venue in the south of the country but dogged recently by the negative publicity surrounding the council’s operating company Portimão Urbis which is subject to a wide ranging police investigation into corruption.
