Campaigner murdered on live radio

gunA Brazilian anti-corruption radio broadcaster has been gunned down in the midst of his live programme.

Two gunmen burst into the Radio Liberdade studio while Gleydson Carvalho was on air and shot Carvalho three times in the head and twice in the chest. He was pronounced dead on the way to hospital.

"They came to the station's facility and said that they had to make an announcement,” police chief Herbert Silva said of the killers.

They quickly overpowered a receptionist and then forced a sound engineer to take cover underneath a desk.

After shooting Carvalho during his lunchtime show they escaped on a motorbike into the surrounds of Camocin, in north east Brazil.

Carvalho was well known for his public stance against corruption in government.

The police chief said that the perpetrators have been identified.

"We're going to find them soon because they don't have water, money, food and they are in a region with a lot of sun, rocks - almost a desert."
