Scotland names its independence date

scotlandThe government in Scotland has named 24 March 2016 as the date on which the country could be independent.

The date is contained in a White Paper from the Scottish government.

Officials in Scotland are referring to it as a “blueprint” for independence.

"It is a landmark document which sets out the economic, social and democratic case for independence," according to the Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

Despite encouraging the public to read it, the initial print run is for only 20,000 copies of the 670-page document.

The actual referendum is set for 18 September 2014. If the majority vote in favour of leaving the UK, the current Scottish Parliament will need to be dissolved.

The proposed date, March 24, is also the anniversary of the Union of the Crowns in 1603.
