Food safety officers from ASAE have impounded more than seven tons of food in a follow up operation after the recent "Street Food" event in Portimão.
The "Street Food" event took place between July 23 and August 2 in Portimão with up to 70 attendees ending up in the local hospital due to dodgy pork rolls purchased from the Mr Pig stand. A local shop was ordered to cease trading due to a worrying lack of hygiene.
ASAE likes nothing better than swooping and officers seized vendors’ food at source, mostly kebabs, reporting that ‘a criminal case has been instituted,’ but not letting on against whom.
The inspection followed the outbreak of multiple cases of food poisoning and aimed to "establish the origin and the operating conditions of the respective vendors' food."
The suspect tonnage was a found at two wholesalers in the municipalities of Montijo and Loulé.
In addition to the food at the warehoises, ASAE officers seized other property worth more than €27,000. Trade from the warehouse in Montijo was suspended for lack of hygiene.
ASAE said it will take "the steps deemed necessary to safeguard the health and safety of consumers" at a time when the consumption of street food is widespread, "because it is a very popular product at summer and traditional festivals."
