Tourists warned against plague in California

squirellPlague has caused the closure of a campground in a popular nature reserve in California.

A pair of dead squirrels was found to be infected with the plague, leading authorities to shut the one of the camp sites, Tuolumne Meadows, at Yosemite National Park.

This is the second campground to be shut down. In July a child who had camped at another site in the park had to be taken to hospital after contracting the disease, and is reported to be recovering.

This was the first known case of plague in California since 2006, but there have been several cases in other US states. Two people in Colorado have died of the disease this year.

That campsite was shut and treated with insecticide.

"Although this is a rare disease, and the current risk to humans is low, eliminating the fleas is the best way to protect the public from the disease," a public health official said.

Yosemite, one of the top tourist destinations in the country, was hit in 2012 by another public health shock involving rodents which also carry a disease called hantavirus. Three people died and nine were very ill as a result of coming into contact with dust from mouse droppings in cabins.
