Bulls claim 12th victim in Spain

bullAnother Spaniard has died after being gored by a bull, bringing the death toll to 12 this summer.

The 66-year-old man suffered severe chest injuries from the bull’s horns during a village festival in the area near Segovia.

There are no official statistics for deaths resulting from being gored, but the bull breeders’ association UCTL said Sunday’s death was the 12th so far.

There are more than 15,000 fiestas across the country each year which involve loose bulls in public spaces. Often, such as at the famous San Fermín running of the bulls in Pamplona, people see how well they can do by running in front of groups of stampeding bulls.

The UCTL pointed out earlier this week that millions of people attend the fiestas and that the deaths incurred this year represented less than 0.1% of the participants.

A growing number of local councils are starting to question not only the health and safety measures needed when live bulls mingle with people but the events themselves. Some councils have cut the subsidies available to mount street parties with bulls.
