Bishops to support refugee efforts in Portugal

churchIn solidarity with the aim of "minimising the impact of the grave human crisis that currently is being experienced globally" Portugal’s Bishops decided as one to join the Platform of Support for Refugees and hope that this and other initiatives will help thousands of people trying to enter Europe.

In a statement issued by the Ecclesia agency, the Bishops are said to have joined several organisations such as the Catholic Work for Migration and the Confederation of Private Institutions of Social Solidarity. The aim is to help coordinate the response of these organisations to the refugee crisis.

The text authorised today by Portugal's Bishops is highly critical of recent statements by the Hungarian Prime Minister, who yesterday said he fears that Europe will lose its "Christian roots" due to the arrival of large numbers of refugees, mostly Muslims.

"The Episcopal Commission for Social Pastoral and Human Mobility is alarmed that these statements which contradict the Gospel," runs the statement which clarifies the Chruch's views and attitudes to the acceptance for resettlement of refugees in Portugal.
