British love affair with beer carries on

beerdrinkerBeer-loving Brits can take heart from the growing number of breweries opening in the UK which cater to individual tastes.

A major increase of 204 last year has seen the number swell to 1,424 across the nation, according to the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).

The last time such numbers were seen was in the 1930s.

“Britain now has more breweries per head than any other country and the range of beers on offer is the best in the world, ranging from the palest golden ale to the darkest, pitch-black stout,” said Roger Protz of CAMRA.

Behind the initiatives is the growing fashion for craft beer. It is estimated that there are 11,000 beer choices now available.

Three breweries open every week in Britain. Together, the beer and pub industry accounts for nearly 870,000 jobs. Even though many pubs have been forced to shut in recent years, the nation still has 53,444.

Sales of alcohol have been declining, a trend which began in the 1970s, but beer sales were up by 1% in 2014.
