Olhão council wants 20 year bank loan for Astro Turf

olhaoOlhão council, one of the poorest in the Algarve, wants to take out a loan of €1.1 million "to make various improvements in the county," including resurfacing its football pitch

The proposal by the Socialist executive will be taken to the Municipal Assembly on Friday, September 18th but needs opposition councillors’ support to vote it through.

The loan will be used, according to the council executive, to "acquire two new 40 seater buses for school transport, to repair the municipal road network and to replace the synthetic football surface at the Estadio Municipal de Olhão."

The proposal has been approved by the executive but now has to go to the full assembly where the socialists do not hold a majority.

The aim is to ‘consult credit institutions with a view to obtaining a loan whose value could rise to €1,119,000.’

‘The period of payment for the buses should be 10 years and for the construction/improvement of the municipal road network and replacing the artificial turf of the Municipal Stadium, 20 years. The period of use of the loan amount must take place by the end of 2016’ according to the council proposal.

At a time when council spending is under tight constraint and Olhão’s accounts have been massaged into reasonably looking shape, the relaying of a football pitch surface may not be high on the list of local priorities for mayor Pina’s opposition.
