The first prize in the latest Euromillions lottery draw was €15 million and the lucky winner bought the golden ticket in a humble street kiosk in Olhão .
There were five second prizes of €198,000 all of which were bought outside the country but of the third prizes of €36,000, two were from Portuguese terminals.
Portugal did pretty well with fourth prizes too, with ten of the 72 winners based here but winning a rather more sobering €2,292.12.
According to Santa Casa da Misericórdia which controls all of Portugal’s gambling, 57 Portuguese residents so far have hit the Euromillions jackpot.
In 2015 there have been three jackpot winners so far, the highest of which was in March where a Felgueiras punter won €100 million.
The biggest win was last October when a ticket buyer in Castelo Branco won an astounding €190 million and is unlikely to have been sober since.
The news stand in Olhão that sold the winning ticket went into party mode today with confetti on the floor, streamers, and posters announcing it was the Valério news stand that was ‘the one.’
The kiosk is located on the Avenida da Republica in Olhão next to the Court and is the first time a Euromillions first prize has been won in the town.
The Valerio kiosk owner, Valter Valério said "We are very happy. I hope the person who won this will enjoy it," adding that he hoped it was someone who "needed it."
Only if the winner comes forward will this be known but the town, the poorest in the Algarve, currently is abuzz with speculation.
Interviewed by Sul Informaçao, Valter Valério when asked if he was expecting a cash bonus, commented, "People promise a lot, but when the time comes, they forget us. Not that I'm asking for any reward, I'm happy for the person and for the advertising and, above all, for my father who gave his name to this kiosk and I'm sorry he is not here to see this."
There also was delight in the algarvedailynews.com Editor's household as Mrs Ed has just annouced another prize has been won in Olhão, this time a Euromillions win of €7.30. The newsagent was pleased but could not be said to be ecstatic.
